Weekend Rides Nov 20-21

Former Bike Riders:

Yes that means you!

I am planning rides for this pre-thanksgiving weekend.  I saw Dan B has planned a Kaldis, but has not said if its Saturday or Sunday.  So I will take the liberty of saying my house this Saturday for a 40-50 mile City Ride.  Lunch will be at the Black Bear Bakery on Cherokee just like last year if anyone shows.  If you are interested in the ride or lunch at the Black Bear let me know.

As for Sunday I am saying its from Kaldis as Dan B broadcast eariler.

My Son's Latest Film

Folks,

This just in from my son Joseph attending the USC film school in California.

As most of you know, this summer I directed my third feature film, THE PASCAL SIGN, which will premiere December 23rd at 7:00PM at the Tivoli Theater. THE PASCAL SIGN tells the story of five people during the final days of their lives, and traces the various moral, spiritual, and romantic obstacles they face knowing their existences will soon come to an end. You can learn more about the film and watch a trailer at www.psychofilms.org

So just like last time.  If you are interested in seeing Joseph's film, just let me know and I am picking up the tickets.  Just remember this is the last film made here in St. Louis before Joseph becomes a professional.

Sunday Rides 10/31

Folks,

Ok its been forever since I have posted to organize a ride.  Just call me bad, or a world traveler.  Luckily at least for this weekend, I am free to ride on this Sunday ( Saturday is out for me ).

I am way out of shape after little riding in the last month, so its going to be 40-50 miles of some City riding.  If you want to join me, plan to be at my house at 9:00 am.

Tour of Shawnee Forest October 22 - 23

Since I am not sure who may be getting what e-mails I figured this might be the easiest way to reach the gang. As things stand right now for Tour of Shawnee Forest Dan Bauer and his wife are going, I am going, Rick Ochs is going, Mike Brady is going, Greg Hobson and his wife are going. Ron Bookout is not going and will be in Mesa. (Muilenburg is planning a bike ride in Mesa sometime soon. I do not know the date.) Roark and Maxine are a maybe.

Mike has a room reserved at the Day's Inn and I have a double room reserved at the Day's Inn. Rick we can share the double room. Mike and Rick, we can take my car. I have a rack that will carry 3 bikes quite well. I was thinking we could meet at Mike's house and try to be on the road by 5:00 - 5:15 Friday night. We can get on Hwy 55 easily from Mike's house. Let me know what you think about this idea. (If we need to cancel the hotel rooms need to be canceled on Tuesday October 19th. Let make sure we are all committed to go by Tuesday.)

Riding this Weekend October 16 - 17

I am not sure about riding on Saturday. May stay around the house to get some things done before the weather turns real bad.

I will be riding Sunday. A Couple of options: one ride into the city and meet at the visitors station at Forest Park around 9:30.

Or meet at my house around 9:00 and ride west county out to St. Albans and surrounding areas.

Let me know what you think.

Ride Oct 30, or 31 or Oct 9th?

Hello all,

Does anyone know of any organized rides in the greater Saint Louis area - or maybe even within 200 miles of STL - that are going out October 30 or 31? I'm looking for a one or two day ride that is about 50 -100 miles each day. Just trying to keep the training / fitness going.

Also - I know the ride the rivers century is Oct 10. Is anyone riding October 9? I'd be interested in something on the 25 - 50 mile range.

When is that late season ride in the Saint Louis area that goes over to that church in Illinois that serves spaghetti for lunch? I know that is a little vague - but I seem to remember an annual ride that goes over there each year for a spaghetti fundraiser of some kind.

Ride the Rivers Century October 10th

Who is planning to do this ride? I will be doing the ride and will most likely drive out to St. Charles to start - that may be dependent on who joins us for the ride. There is a senior from Clayton HS who may join us. We pick him up at the rest stop at Forest Park. More info on that later. Early registration closes on September 30th.

Southern Illinios Ride, October 23rd

Mark, Dr. Dan, Roark and all,

Can one of you post some info on the ride you are looking at for October 23rd? I know you have sent some e-mails, but I'm not sure if the info is here on the blog or if I am just missing it.

I've been looking at my work schedule, and I will be able to join the ride and I am looking forward to it. Lynda is a maybe as well.

Thanks,

Mike

And a good time was had by all....

So..... I hope Roark can post the picture of the crazy dude riding the Wiskey Barrell on the Old Kentucky Home Tour last weekend. Pretty nuts.

Roark, Lynda and I all had a great time on the OKHT ride. It's a good ride for the gang too if we want to look into it next year. Or, another possibility is to ride in that area on a different weekend too. Now that Roark, Lynda and I have checked out the area I'm sure we can put together a weekend of riding in the area even on other dates. It's a great area. Road conditions were as good or better than Horsey Hundred (think smooth black top), but I'd say the roads are a bit more challenging than the Horsey, but not so tough it would kick our butts. A good challenging ride that wont kill you, with not much traffic and smooth roads. And things to do in the evenings too.

Roark and I managed 126 miles over the two days (about 7000 feet of climbing). Lynda came in at about 95 miles for the two days and I am guessing she covered about 4500+ feet of climbing - her best two day total ever. Way to go!

More info next year and down the line.

I hope Roark posts that picture.......

Rides this week (8-24 to 8-29) and weekend

Hello all,

I'm looking to see if anyone has any rides planned for this week during the week? I can't ride the Wednesday night fun club ride, so that is out for me.

Also, my work week is hectic, so don't go out of your way to plan for me.

I might see if I can join the North County ride that Paul Kitka, Ron Bookout and all do. Anything else happening Tuesday evening?

Wednesday AM I have a maybe for the morning. Don't John J and Bill P do a ride Wednesday mornings? Also, what about Dr. Dan? Is there still a ride he does each Wednesday AM?

Thursday evening is a maybe for me too.

Saturday (8-28) I'm not sure how my day will turn out. Part of the day will be Amanda's Bat Mitzvah.

Sunday (8-29) I am looking for something in the 40-50 mile range. Maybe a ride that can be part medium hard (maybe to Roark's or to the Kirkwoood hills area), and then on the way home through Forest Park and such. I'm hoping the second half of my Sunday ride can be a pretty easy pace and maybe meet Lynda for the last 25 miles of the day. We could also see about the whole day being maybe on the medium / easier side and maybe going to coffee at some place like Mississippi Mud or similar.

Let me (us) know your plans,

Mike and Lynda,

Sad Partings Ride Weekend

Ok Folks,

I am looking for local easy riding this weekend.

Sunday 9:30 am, Joseph aka the Spawn flies out for USC.  So Saturday I am looking for an early easy short ride from my house just in case he chooses to spend time his last Saturday with us instead of with his friends.

Sunday, I am looking for a  lick the wounds ride starting late afternoon, just to get out and forget Joseph has left. Maybe some coffee and some city loops in the heat.

Charlie Brinkmeyer's 83rd Birthday Ride

This weekend is Charlie Brinkmeyer's 83rd birthday ride. This year he is doing 83 miles in two days instead of one day. The ride will be at 8:30 starting by the Culver's in Collinsville on both Friday and Saturday.
Sunday is the I Scream for Ice Cream ride starting in Collinsville. If anyone is interested in this ride and would like to do more than the long route (42 miles), I can suggest several different starting points to get additional miles: my house for 16 more miles, Culver's in Collinsville for 22 more miles, Horseshoe Lake for 30 more miles or the end of Schoolhouse trail for 38 more miles.

Sunday Ride 8-8-10

Instead of doing the Trailnet ride in Mascoutah we are proposing a closer to home option.
We are looking for riders to do a Creve Couer Park to Per Marquet ride Sunday. So far we have Paul Kikta, John Janro and me. The wife's will be doing a shorter friendlier route.
Could be around a 60 miler.
Start around 8:00.

News From St. Charles on Bicycle Ban

Folks....John J asked me to post the latest on St. Charles.

Folks,

I listened to the public debate that was on line from last night's St. Charles County Council meeting.  If you are not aware, a bill was introduced to ban bicycling on D, DD, F, Z, and south Hwy 94 in St. Charles County until such time as shoulders could be built.  While most of us rarely ride those highways any longer due to traffic and road conditions, my ultimate concern is that this ban would spread to other sections of the county.  That is exactly what happened last night. While the bill has been tabled, the county representative for the district that covers Hwy B, C, H, and Hwy 94 in St. Charles County has asked that the ban be amended to include his roads as well.

The issues seems to be that the angry farmers are calling that they can't get their tractors around the cyclists in Northern St. Charles County because there are too many of us.  It keeps them from harvesting their crops and plowing their fields.  The majority of the council was opposed to cyclists stating that we were not courtious, didn't obey laws, and disrupted the flow of traffic creating large traffic jams.  Nothing was said about the trucks that try to run cyclists off the road.

The state representatives were also supportive of the ban on cycling.  They stated that millions have been spent on bicycle trails and we should only ride on the trails.

The bill was tabled until next month.  This gives all cyclists time to let our voices be heard.  The county council did say they heard from cyclists but the statements were all about us and not how we could solve the problems or help the community.  If this passes, we may all find that all roads are shutdown except the Katy Trail, Madison County trails,  and Creve Couer park. While we know of riders who create the problem by not riding single file when traffic approaches and not obeying the traffic laws, I think it is time we let our voices be heard.  Please read the following list of contacts and express your opinion.

It would also be helpful if the St. Louis Bicycle Federation, bike shops, and the Missouri Bicycle Federation started expressing opinions on this one.

Proposed County Ordinance To Ban Bicycle On Hwy D, Hwy Dd, Hwy Z, Hwy F, Hwy 94 PDF Print E-mail edit

Joe Brazil, County Council Member, is introducing a bill on July
12th County Councilmeeting to ban cycling on these roads.
The meeting is Monday night at7:00 p.m. in the Council
Chambers at old courthouse in St. Charles.

Bill No. 3620 - Prohibit bicycles on Highway
DD, D, F, Z & 94 from Hwy. 40 to County line until
shoulders or bicycle lanes are in place.

July 12th Agenda http://council.sccmo...id=23&Itemid=44

Of course it could take a very long time before such changes
are made to these roads.
Debbie Dyn Keyes from Shoulders for Saftey are planning
on having a group attend in support of this ban.

Please contact the council members to urge them not to support
this bill. Even if you are not in the district we are all users of
these roads.

New Town Big Shark Triathlon

For anyone who is interested. The triathlon was today. The course was very flat and consisted of a .6 mile swim, 20 mile bike ride and a 4 mile run. Due to a glitch in the system, the swim time includes the first transition. Swim and first transition in 23:36 (the swim was quite a bit better because I spent between 5 and 10 minutes in the first transition). Bike in 1:01:52 with a max speed of 26.2 (my computer) and an average speed of 19.4 (their calculation) with plenty of head wind for half the ride. 3:31 in the second transition. The run (walk) took 51:48 (12:57 min mile). I had some guy drafting me (not allowed) just after the 10 mile mark on the bike. He was not right on my wheel but he was less than the required 3 bike lengths behind me. I would pass someone and then pull way over to the right and he would do the same and stay right behind me. I finally slammed my brakes on! He had to swerve and go around me. I don't think he will try that again in a no draft triathlon.

St. Charles County Considers Banning Bicycles on Some Roads

More evidence of the hostility toward cyclists in St. Charles County...

KMOV had a story on their website regarding the St. Charles County Council introducing a bill on Monday, July 12 to ban bicycles from any highway without shoulders or bike lanes. This would at least initially be in southwest St. Charles County. Here's a link to the story.

Saturday Bike Ride and Movie Extras at MoBat!

Folks,

Tomorrow (Saturday June 25th) Joseph is shooting a hospital scene at Missouri Baptist Hospital in the Pediatrics Building.  He needs extras at noon.  He wants a mix of individuals, and guess what, bikers are in!

You can just show up in any style of clothing you desire or you can join me for a city ride that rendezvous at Missouri Baptist at noon.  That's right a city ride, and then  you can hang all sweaty at MoBat in biking clothes just like we are worried about a downed biker.

The shoot may take an hour or two, so my van will be available to drive anyone home afterwards who does not want to get back on their bike.

Let me know if your interested in the ride, or can just make it to be an extra at MoBat.  This will be your last chance to be in a  Joe  film, before he goes professional and becomes famous!

Thinking Outside the Box (an alternative to MS 150)

Folks,

I know many of you are still tied to the MS150 in September.  I on the other hand am newly free from all entanglements! So with that in mind, after eight or so years doing the MS150 I was thinking of trying something new, the "Old Kentucky Home Bicycle Tour".  The ride is briefly described below:

The 33rd Annual Old Kentucky Home Bicycle Tour, (aka OKHT), is a two-day ride departing from E.P."Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville,Ky. on Saturday, September 11th, with 3 mileage routes to historic Bardstown, Ky.
A 50-mile, 72-mile, and a very challenging 102-mile century, which includes the legendary Pottershop Hill ! It is the winner of the League of American Bicyclists Best Century award.
On Sunday, September 12th, there are two routes from Louisville. The 25 mile short route goes out to the Fern Creek Fire Station and back to Sawyer Park. The 50-mile, single-day loop goes out to our  FAMOUS " Homemade Cookie Stop" sag stop and joins up with the 2-day riders coming back from Bardstown for the return ride back to Sawyer Park via a gorgeous scenic route.

Here is the link for more info:  www.okht.org

If you want to try something new, let me know.  I am up for a new bicycling adventure to keep from getting stale.

Thanks,

Roark

The Coming Weeks Rides 6/7-6/13

Folks,

I thought I would be pro-active now that the weekend is half over and I head to DC on Sunday.  I come back Wednesday, so of course the Wednesday Night Ride is out.   After Thursday morning it will be just the boys in my house, and since the 18 year old boy pretty much makes films and does  his own thing, I am planning ahead.

So here are my plans.

I will be doing an evening Ride Thursday night, with John J.  John is putting up with my rather slow speeds these days.  BTW John is atop a brand new electrically charged Dura Ace Bicycle.

Friday morning I plan to be social and go over and join the Illinois Horseshoe Lake ride.

Saturday I am hoping for something with hills, Chesterfield Valley works, or the Hills of Kirkwood.

Sunday I plan to ride from my house to support Amanda Ls Huntingtons Cure Ride at Creve Coeur Lake, with an after ride loop say to Crooked Tree to enjoy some coffee.  That is unless my 18 year old is willing to ride with me around Creve Coeur Lake.  In that case I will just ride with him, and drive to and from the lake.

So let me know if your plans coincide and you would like to be company (good or bad).  Start times and places are open for input.

A Post from My Son! - Let Him Know If You Are Interested

I am posting this for Joseph.  Please let him or me know if you are interested.  ----- Roark

Hey everybody,

In case you didn't know, I will be shooting a new feature film entitled "The Pascal Sign" this summer. The Pascal Sign tells the story of five unique personas during the religious End of Days, as they struggle to answer the difficult question of how one gives life meaning during the end of time. The movie, which will run about two hours, features a professional cast from all over the mid-west, a new High Definition format, and Surround Sound!

Production for The Pascal Sign takes place over the entire month of June, and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

There are a series of small non-verbal roles throughout the film for extras and if you are interested in being featured in one of these scenes that would really help us out. Please let me know if any of these work for you and you would like to be involved. Please forward this to any person you think would be interested.

Thanks,

Joe Weil

Sunday of course I will be riding for brats and strawberries on the Strawberry Festival Ride. http://www.trailnet.org/documents/berryflyer.pdf

Please help.....

I received word from the woman who collects the registration forms for Amanda's HUNTING-TONS for a Cure Bike Ride that she has only about 5 people registered. This event would be a great lunch stop for a longer ride. We would like registrations in by 5/20/10 so that we have enough of everything. It's only $20 and includes lunch, snow cones, music by a DJ, optional t-shirt, raffle/door prizes. Huntingtons has affected our family for years. My mom died from it. My sister has been diagnosed with it. I have not yet been tested for it. Please take time today to send in your registration form.

Pre Mom's Day Ride

Folks,

Well last week I got in say about 175 miles of bike time.  This week I have less days to ride, just Saturday due to Mother's Day and working Friday.

So if your not in shul, or other commitments how about a long 60 mile ride Saturday.  I can make up the route, or take suggestions.  A 9 am departure from my house would be good.

Weekend Bike Rides

Folks,

It seems like its been forever since I was able to ride on a weekend to my hearts content.  Well I think I just might be able to slip one in before graduation season sneeks up on me.  So I plan to ride assuming the weather holds, Friday (yes I get to take one of my off Fridays!), Saturday, and Sunday!  Since I am way out of shape I am not planning on and Frondos or Frodos or even a Gandalf ride.

I am open to reasonable suggestions.  My options to begin with include:

Friday - The Horseshoe Lake Contigent Ride (40-50 miles)
Saturday - Tour de Stooges Ride (64 miles)
Sunday - Maeystown Fruehlingsfest Ride (50 miles)

Hope to get back on the right road!

Sunday Earth Day Bike Ride

Let's do an Earth Day Bike Ride. I will ride from my house on Sunday morning - and head to Olivette and pick up Roark and then we can head into the City and end up at Forest Park.
I'll leave my house around 8:00 and get to Roark's just before 9:00.
Dan, how does that time work for you on Sunday morning?

Late Ride Saturday

Folks,

My plans for this weekend are go with the flow.  I am having a quarter century celebration at the ole shul so I will be riding Saturday for a short ride sometime after the kiddush on Saturday.  Sunday since I am leaving for Washington DC for a week of fun, I will either be riding short and early, or doing a double spin session.

Weekend Heat Wave

Folks,

Oil those creaky knees. I hear we are in for a weekend heat wave!

Feb 27 Saturday
A few clouds. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the upper 20s.
Feb 28 Sunday
Mix of sun and clouds. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the upper 20s.

Thats right its going to be in the 40s this weekend. How about a short coffee house ride starting you know at my house. I might even share a Groupon with you! I figure thirty miles tops, just to not forget you know how to ride a bike.

I am up for either day. Lets wait till at least 10:30 to get the heat of the day. Other then that I am open to suggestions.

Creakkkkkkkkkk...........

Thats the sound your knees are making from lack of use. What's become of all the spandax clad folks I used to cycle with? Spring can't be that far away, so if its too cold to cycle, get on those spinning bikes.

Lets start to hear suggestions for spring rides! Summer rides! Fall rides!

Do you get the pictue, bicycle rides!

Till then you can join me at the J, where this weekend, Saturday I spun for two hours , and Sunday I spun for an hour and did weights on legs for the next hour.

Don't forget Mark is making plans for a week long bicycle ride in Maine this Summer. Right now I think its only three of us.

Saturday Brunch 12:30 Black Bear Bakery

Folks,

I dont know if the weather will be good enough to ride, but lets plan to meet at 12:30 in the afternoon for Brunch at the Black Bear Bakery on Cherokee.

Best Vegan-Friendly Brunch
Black Bear Bakery
Venue
Black Bear Bakery
2639 Cherokee St.
St. Louis, MO
314-771-2236

Vegans dreamin' of a steamin' weekend feast would do well to head toward Cherokee Street for the neighborhood brunch at Black Bear Bakery. Each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the bakery's staff — which collectively owns and operates the establishment — serves up French toast, egg casserole, biscuits, mushroom gravy and homemade apple butter for the vegetarians. But vegans have options too: potatoes (fried and seasoned); kale or collards (sautéed and steamed), hearty buckwheat pancakes, mixed fruit and salad. Twenty-five-year-old Chris Scheetz, who does a lot of the cooking on Saturdays, says he'll use whatever produce he can get his hands on. Sometimes that means harvesting what's in season from the garden across the back alley. At $9 for all you can eat ($10 with coffee), another demographic may also enjoy this brunch: call us the locavoracious.

Gymnastics competition Sun 2/28/10

I just wanted to let you all know that Melina has a gymnastics meet at the America's Center (701 Convention Plaza) on Sun 2/28/10. Warm ups start at 4:30pm and the first event will probably start at 5pm. There's an entrance fee (probably about $10 per person). If you're going to be there, let me know so we can keep an eye out for you.
Thanks.

Former Bike Riders;

Its damn cold outside, chances are there will be no ride next Saturday again. So how about we meet and greet for coffee someplace next Saturday about 12:30 in the afternoon. I have some suggestions, once I know there is some interest.

I dont know all the details of when I am leaving (eg Friday), and what I will be riding on Sunday. I just plan to do it. If your interested, let me know.
