Horsey Hotels booked, and travel comment

Hello all,

I booked three rooms in Frankfort, KY for the Horsey Hundred. We have the rooms for two nights, so we will be home basing from there the whole weekend. I booked one room for Mark and Nancy, and two other rooms to split amoung whoever is left. If it turns out we only need one room, I will cancel one.

It should take us about 5 hours drive time to get to Frankfort, plus additional time for stops. Plus, we loose an hour. I can probably only get away around 3:30 on that Friday - I might be able to make it 3:00, but that may be pushing it. So, if we leave (from my house, or wherever) at 3:30 and we have about an hour in stops (I figure two stops, but one may be longer for dinner), we will probably be getting in to Frankfort around 10:30 or 11:00 - but that will be local, Eastern time, so not really that bad.

Then from Frankfort in the morning, we can leave the hotel at 7:00 and be at the ride registration / packet pick-up pretty close to 7:30 and maybe rolling by 8:00 or 8:15.

I do plan on driving. I can take me plus two others. Remember, company car and compnay gas, so it's cheap!

Talk to you all soon,

Mike

I'm in for Horsey Hundred and will sign up tonight also. I'm bringing my Explorer so I can probably carry a bike or two if needed.

Mike, is there still space in any of the rooms?

Mike, thank you for reserving the hotel rooms. It sounds like there are 7 going on this trip. If we could take two vehicles that would be great rather than 3. I will drive if necessary. We could get 4 people in Mike's car and 3 bikes and 3 people in Bill's car and 4 bikes it might work.

Just count me in, and find me a room and a seat in a car.

I think we are set on this. I'll plan on driving, with 4 people in the car and 3 bikes on the rack. That leaves the other car for the opposite configuration.

I think we'll stick with 3 hotel rooms. I think that means either Ron and I share a bed, or Bill and I, or we bring a matress, or we find out if we can get a roll-a-way bed. I'm good with option 1 or 2. I would rather spoon with a friend than go with option 3 or 4.

Ron - I'm sure we can meet up. I wasn't sure if you meant before we leave St. Louis, or on the route in KY. Either way I'm sure we can meet and drive / ride together.

Who is going to be in who's car heading to Horsey Hundred? I have my Explorer but in order to carry a bunch of bikes, I have to remove the rear seat to give enough clearance for upright cycles with front wheels off. Then I know I can get three bikes inside, maybe four. Five will be pushing it but I also have a hitch rack that holds two.

I doubt I can leave early unless our boss decides to close early. So I expect to leave after 5:00ish. That means I'll arrive late to Frankfort. I'll bring a small cot and sleeping bag too. It's really quite comfy...for a cot.

As of Tuesday afternoon, I have a co-pilot seat open and space for up to 4 bikes. Let me know.

It looks like there are 7 of us going. Roark mentioned the other day that John may want to leave early on Friday. If John leaves early Roark would ride with him. Roark and John what are your plan?

If we can get 4 bikes on Bill's vehicle and 3 people in his car and Mike can take 3 bikes and 4 people we can get it done with two vehicles. Mike and Bill is that a possibility. If we have too leave after 5 to do this I am OK with it.

If John and Roark go early a third alternative is to have Mike and Bill drive out together and I will drive my honda (better gas mileage) and will take Nancy and Ron since we are all up North. We could still plan to leave after 5:00 and all head down the road together from Mike's house.

Your thoughts.

I talked with Bill last night. With the bikes in his car, he only has room for one passenger riding shotgun.

I dont think we will be able to get to Kentucky in time for the 9 am ride start Friday, so right now John and I do not plan to go early to ride.

Since I am off Friday and John is always off, we both are available for early departures if any of the vehicles are leaving early.

What we need to do is figure out logistically, how to get seven people and seven bikes in the fewest and most cost effective vehicles.

I may be able to get 3 people in my Explorer and carry 4 bikes. Here's the deal. The interior height from cargo deck to ceiling isn't tall enough to accomodate some of our bikes, even with the front wheel removed and the fork mounted in a lock down. It's about 1 1/2 inches too short and hits the saddle. Mine barely fits but when I tried it with Roark's the saddle is what contacts the ceiling. My solution is to remove the rear seat. That sounds major but really is not. The rear seat is in two segments. A single seat on the left and double on the right. I can take out the right side by removing 6 nuts and lifting it off the mounting bolts. That would allow plenty of space for 2 bikes on the right and a passenger on the left with a small amount of space behind him for luggage. My hitch rack holds 2 more so I can carry 3 people and 4 bikes. It won't be the most luxurious of accomodations but I believe it will work.

I spoke with Mark and we have a plan. John has the flu so he won't be joining us as I understand it. So with 6 riders we no longer need to use the Explorer for the trip.

Here's our plan. Mark and Nancy will pick up Ron and meet me at Roark's house around 5:00pm Friday (tomorrow). I'll load Roark's bike and we'll go to Mike's house. At Mike's house we can load 3 bikes on his car and the other three on Mark's. We can also decide who is riding in which car and leave together.

Excellent plan Bill - see you at Roarks. If you are able to leave work sooner let me now and we'll get to Roark's sooner.
